On the way to Frankfurt: Open call 2026 for translating Chilean literature into German

This initiative aims to promote the visibility of Chilean literature through the translation of works, from both emerging and established authors, as well as the country’s literary heritage. It seeks to strengthen Chile’s presence in the German-speaking world in anticipation of its role as Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2027. Application deadline: 11:59 PM on July 10, 2025.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, through its Division of Cultures, Arts, Heritage and Public Diplomacy (DIRAC), is pleased to announce an open call for Translating Chilean Literature into German. This initiative aims to promote the translation of Chilean literary works, both classical and contemporary, as well as reflective and creative writings of cultural relevance, in line with the strategic objectives and priorities of Chile’s foreign policy.

One of the specific purposes is to increase the number of Chilean books translated into German, thereby strengthening the presence of Chilean literature in the German-speaking world ahead of Chile’s participation as Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2027.

Who can apply?
Only Foreign publishers from countries which Chile has a presence in Austria, Switzerland or Germany.

Eligible works are:
Classical or contemporary, fiction or non-fiction, in the genres of novels, short stories, poetry, essays, graphic narratives, drama, children's and young adult literature, and writings of memory (letters, chronicles, autobiographies and biographies).

Application deadline: 11:59 PM on July 10, 2025, Chile Continental Time.
